HERITAGE REFURBISHMENT & NEW BUILD

Cambridge Military Hospital

Weston Homes / Aldershot

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Conex package

Client
Weston Homes
Project context
Aldershot

Project start: September 2019.

Conex delivered labour-only carpentry packages across several phases of the Cambridge Military Hospital development for Weston Homes. The scheme combined new homes with the refurbishment of Victorian and Edwardian Grade II listed buildings.

The supplied Aldershot presentation describes residential refurbishment across the former Cambridge Military Hospital, Gunhill House and Water Tower, and Louise Margaret Hospital. It also identifies the McGrigor area, including the refurbishment of St. Michael House and Cambridge House alongside five new houses.

SCOPE OF WORKS

Specialist work on site

  • Labour-only carpentry packages across multiple phases
  • Roof repairs and new roof carpentry
  • Timber floor and joist installation
  • Internal carpentry and timber stairs
  • Works to historic buildings and new homes

The project challenge

Historic construction required careful planning of temporary support, lifting and access. Existing roof trusses weighed more than half a tonne, with floor-to-floor heights exceeding 3.8 metres. A planned approach to propping, remediation and working platforms supported the timber works.

The delivery approach

The project used trained operatives to install and maintain working platforms for joist replacement. Conex also worked with environmental specialists on the protected bat roosts identified on site, incorporating specialist training and appropriate roof materials and alternative roost provisions.

Project record

The project progresses from existing conditions through installation to completed communal interiors, including clock-tower stairs, floors, roofs, the former library, the sales-area roof and the courtyard roof.
